Travesía Atacama-Uyuni salt flat Travesía Atacama-Uyuni salt flat

Lodge to Lodge journey from Atacama desert in Chile to the Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia.

La Travesía is an all-inclusive private trip, for 2 people, that goes from the Atacama desert in Chile to the salt flats of Uyuni in Bolivia (or vice versa), in a 4×4 vehicle, together with an Explora guide and local driver. Travelers will be able to enjoy this trip with our itineraries, which start+ from 7 nights.

Our lodge in Atacama, along with our mountain lodges, Ramaditas and Chituca,  and Uyuni Lodge in Bolivia –established in partnership with local families– serve as bases to explore, day after day, the unique landscapes and wonders   of the Altiplano.

  • During the Travesía in this remote territory you may encounter spectacular wildlife such as vicuñas, flamingos, llamas, birds and vizcachas.

  • The landscapes you will experience while exploring this territory can feel out of this world and leave you speechless. The volcanos, geysers, spectacular multi-colored lagoons, among others, exist in a pristine, lightly explored natural environment, that opens itself up to you.

  • Andean culture: small villages that maintain the age-old traditions alive where you can see agricultural activity like quinoa plantations.

  • We offer different types of explorations during the Travesía, depending on where we are. Travelers will enjoy different activities, such as hiking, horseback riding, overland crossings, astronomy and high mountain ascents, which range from basic to advanced level. Each exploration will take you to different areas where the wildlife and landscape are the protagonists.

The more nights you stay, the more you can explore in each location.

Safety & Expertise
  • We have roamed and deeply studied the Atacama desert and the Altiplano for over 15 years. Such experience has allowed us to become experts guides in the region and to ensure traveler safety at all times.
  • Our vehicles are equipped with satellite communication systems, GPS technology, VHF radio, and oxygen supplies.
  • All guides and drivers, are vetted for their senior guiding experience and local knowledge for this travesía. After so many years of preparation, we have been rewarded: in 2022 we were named as World’s Leading Expedition Company in the World Travel Awards, for the fourth year in a row.
Altitude
  • During the journey through the Altiplano, the altitudes fluctuate between 2,407 and 4,075 m.a.s.l. (7,896 and 13,336 f.a.s.l)
  • Uyuni is located at 3,681 m.a.s.l. (12,076 f.a.s.l.) while the oasis of San Pedro is located at 2,407 m.a.s.l. (7,896 f.a.s.l.).
  • Acclimatization is fundamental and will be prioritized. During the first day of the travesía, we will only take non-strenuous walks in order to gradually acclimate our bodies to the altitude before the rest of the journey. We recommend beginning in Atacama where altitude is lower than in Uyuni, which makes the acclimatization process easier.
Health
  • Adventure and good spirit: It is important to be healthy enough to withstand higher altitudes and fluctuating temperatures.
Climate
  • With more than 90% of sunny days, San Pedro de Atacama has mild weather all year-round. Uyuni´s weather is as dry as San Pedro’s but, because it is at higher altitude,  it is usually colder, especially at night when temperatures can drop as low as -68°F (-20°C).
