A New Chapter in Patagonia: Explora Expands Its Frontiers of Exploration
Wilderness knows no borders in Patagonia — a land of vast horizons, ancient glaciers, and boundless beauty. For more than three decades, Explora has invited travelers to discover this southern frontier through a philosophy of deep exploration. Today, that story unfolds even further with the opening of two new lodges: Explora El Calafate in Argentina and Explora Torres del Paine Conservation Reserve in Chile.
Together, they complete the most extensive network of lodges in Patagonia, offering access to six destinations across Chile and Argentina — a seamless route through one of the planet’s last great wildernesses.
El Calafate: Beyond the Iconic Perito Moreno Glacier
Set on the wind-brushed steppe with sweeping views toward Lake Argentino and the Perito Moreno Glacier, the new Explora El Calafate rises quietly from the Patagonian landscape. Here, the air carries the refreshing breeze of glacial winds and the serene silence of Patagonia — a place where time feels suspended before nature’s immensity.
The lodge is designed to be a sanctuary of calm and connection. With just 20 guest rooms, its architecture, conceived by Chilean architect José Cruz Ovalle, reflects a deep respect for the territory, blending harmoniously with the landscape. Built from modular elements crafted in Mendoza, Argentina, it was assembled with minimal impact, ensuring that the delicate ecosystems around it remain untouched. After a day in the wild, guests return to a serene space for rest and contemplation — outdoor hot tubs, a cold plunge, massage rooms, and a menu inspired by Patagonian ingredients and traditions.
Explorations here go far beyond the glacier. With more than 30 guided experiences for all activity levels — hikes, horseback rides, overlands, and lake navigations — they reveal the vast landscapes of Los Glaciares National Park. Each journey, led by Explora’s expert guides, is designed for immersion, revealing a Patagonia few ever see.
Torres del Paine Conservation Reserve: An Intimate Patagonian Sanctuary
On the edge of one of Patagonia’s most famous destinations, the second new property — Explora Torres del Paine Conservation Reserve — lies just outside the park’s northeastern boundary, within Explora’s own private reserve.
This is Patagonia as few experience it: a place of stillness, solitude, and deep connection. From the lodge’s windows, the Torres peaks rise like sentinels beyond the steppe. The landscape here is alive with native wildlife, paleontological wonders, and centuries of gaucho heritage. With only 10 guest rooms, a small spa, and an outdoor jacuzzi facing the mountains, the lodge invites travelers to slow down, listen, and discover a quieter and wilder side of these pristine landscapes.
The reserve itself is a living example of Explora’s conservation vision. Guests can visit Explora’s stables to meet the horses and observe active conservation projects, or share a traditional meal at the Quincho, a Chilean barbecue house that celebrates the flavors and culture of the region. Explorations here are curated for all levels — from guided hikes through fossil fields in the Sierra Baguales, to horseback rides across the steppe and self-guided trails designed for those who wish to explore at their own rhythm. Each experience embodies Explora’s promise: to explore deeply and connect profoundly.
Six Destinations, One Journey Through Patagonia
With the addition of El Calafate and Torres del Paine Conservation Reserve, Explora now offers five lodges and one expedition across Patagonia, creating a unified network that transcends borders. From Torres del Paine National Park to El Calafate, or the Los Huemules Conservation Reserve near El Chaltén, and from Patagonia National Park in Chile’s Aysén region to the remote Tierra del Fuego Expedition, travelers can weave together a continuous journey through landscapes as varied as they are vast.
Explora makes this connection effortless. Daily flights link regional gateways, and select overland or private air transfers ensure seamless movement from one lodge to another. It’s a way to experience Patagonia as a single, interconnected territory.
