The horseback riding expeditions that we offer at explora Atacama and explora Patagonia are designed for experienced riders looking for a new challenge, who are willing to explore the remotest corners of South America: Atacama, the world’s driest and highest desert and the cradle of a culture that is over 10,000 years old; and Patagonia, the southernmost inhabited region in the world, characterized by its rugged mountains, valleys, glaciers and its traditional gaucho culture.By using the explora passport benefit, you can combine both expeditions in one journey, starting in Patagonia.
Horseback riding in wild patagonia5 days / 4 nights | See Itinerary
Over a century ago, Patagonia became home to a new settler who, over time, developed his own unique culture: the gaucho. A free, solitary yet friendly character, he awakes before dawn to drive his cattle across the pampa, the wide open grasslands of this far flung corner of the world.
Horses have traditionally been used by the gauchos, who are expert horsemen, to cover the vast Patagonian pampa to communicate with one another and to go about their daily work on their ranches.
Our explora Patagonia horseback riding program (5 days / 4 nights) lets you live the gaucho lifestyle and discover one of the world’s most pristine and wild landscapes: the Torres del Paine National Park, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978.
Horseback riding in the extreme desert5 days / 4 nights | See Itinerary
It is the driest, highest desert in the world. Yet in the Atacama Desert, life flourishes in the oases formed by the streams that flow down from the vast imposing heights of the Andes Mountains.
The Atacama Desert is full of surprises: mountains, volcanos, salt flats, geysers, wetlands, hot springs and an array of animal and plant life. It also has a culture that dates back 10,000 years, vestiges of which can still be seen today in the daily lives of the local Atacameños.
At explora Atacama, our horseback riding program lets you discover one of the most extreme landscapes on this planet in total comfort and safety.
Our horseback rides are designed for experienced riders who feel confident handling a horse in open spaces and a variety of situations. You should be proficient in walking, trotting and galloping on horseback for a minimum of three hours.
If you are travelling with a partner or your family, other members of your group can choose from a range of activities (treks or easy horserides). Our guides at the lodge are available every day to help you choose suitable alternatives. Similarly, if you wish to do a different activity during one of the mornings or afternoons, you can sign up for one of our other explorations.
